It is my great privilege to represent the people of Monash in the Parliament of Australia. Our local area is a great place to live, work and raise a family and I work to ensure it continues to be an even better place for us all.

In addition to serving our Monash community, I am a vocal advocate for a just and compassionate society with a focus on: a fair and sustainable NDIS, care and dignity for our elders and their carers, respect for women, flexibility and support for small businesses and the humane treatment of refugees.

Balancing work, family, finances (and everything else!) is increasingly difficult families today.

While the Labor Government’s proposed 3-day childcare guarantee is a step forward, it falls short by limiting parental choice.

I believe the solution lies in providing families with the freedom to decide how they use childcare benefits. Whether it’s using a childcare centre, enabling a parent to stay home, or accessing grandparent support, parents should have the flexibility to choose what works best for them.

Yes the parents need more choice

This I love 🙌 a family should get to choose whether they want to send their child to daycare or raise them at home in those precious early years. The government puts so much money into daycare!

Russell Broadbent here, your Independent Member for Monash. The Australian Human Rights Commission is copping a lot of heat – and rightly so. Last week respected Liberal MP Julian Leeser delivered a ferocious attack on the Commission, saying its very existence should be called into question for failing to defend Jewish Australians. He said the commission is “flailing and failing” and that if the Commission “cannot fulfil its purpose, we must question its very existence” which includes a budget of $43m and 200 staff. I wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments. Yesterday the Commission released its report titled: Collateral Damage: What the untold stories from the COVID -19 pandemic reveal about human rights in Australia. I don’t need a report to tell me about the damage, despair and desperation left in the wake of Australia’s response to the pandemic … because I’ve been listening to these untold stories – untold because so many were censored – for the past five years. Remember the hundreds of days in lockdown, mask mandates, limits on how far you could travel from your home, limits on how many times a day you could leave your home, limits on how much toilet paper you could buy, and vax mandates so you could go to work and feed your family? Of course, there were going to be consequences for such draconian and inhumane rules and excessive government overreach! This report from The Human Rights Commission is way too little and way too late! • What’s the Commission doing about the 40 unvaxxed firies who are still refused the right to work due to covid mandates? • What about the thousands of Australians whose lives have been ruined by vaccine injury? • What about the punitive No Jab No Pay policies which punish parents who want to make an informed decision to not vaccinate their children? • What about the small businesses who were forced to shut up shop while bottle-os, Bunnings and brothels stayed open? The Commissioner says the report is not about placing blame – but it absolutely should be! Governments at all levels must be held to account for the pain, suffering and distress that’s been perpetrated against the people of this great nation. Basic human rights might have been an afterthought for the government and the human rights commission during the pandemic. But they weren’t for me. That’s justice as I see it.

Russell Broadbent here, your Federal Member for Monash. Chris Uhlmann puts it best, ‘Energy is Everything, and without Energy there is no Economy’. We are seeing this right now with rapid rises in employment in the public-funded ‘care economy’, at the expense of reduced employment in manufacturing and other productive industry. It’s a sign, among others, that the industrial capability that built this nation is no longer. Australia’s largest electricity user, Tomago Aluminium, says they can’t continue smelting under the current exorbitant costs of electricity. It’s the same message from every single business and household in Australia – but the Albanese Government is deaf to their calls. If we want to genuinely ease the cost of living, we need cheaper energy for cheaper food and cheaper electricity. If we want to address falling productivity in this country, we need cheap energy for Australian industries to compete in this globalised economy. In terms of the marketplace for energy, coal is better placed to meet demand all the time, 24/7. Renewables simply can’t do this, and as the proportion of intermittent supply grows, the bigger cost on the entire energy system. Coal-fired electricity is still 37% cheaper than renewables even when considering the fuel cost. So, when it comes to the energy debate, there is only one clear winner – It’s the system Australia was built on. We thrived on baseload power provided by Australian coal and supported by gas peaking generators. This provides the lowest system cost, and the lowest cost to end-users…us. Energy is a component of every good and service that we consume. It has a huge lever on the economy, and if we want to restore Australia to its former glory, let’s get back to coal and gas. That’s Justice as I see it for this nation.
