It is my great privilege to represent the people of Monash in the Parliament of Australia. Our local area is a great place to live, work and raise a family and I work to ensure it continues to be an even better place for us all.

In addition to serving our Monash community, I am a vocal advocate for a just and compassionate society with a focus on: a fair and sustainable NDIS, care and dignity for our elders and their carers, respect for women, flexibility and support for small businesses and the humane treatment of refugees.

Russell Broadbent here, your Member for Monash – bringing trust, reason, and common sense. It’s no secret that more people have been moving to regional areas in recent years. Who wouldn’t want to live in a region like Gippsland? It’s the perfect place to raise a family and the daily commute to the city is quite manageable - if you get a good run! My office is based in Warragul, and one thing I’ve noticed over the past few years is the increasing number of cars on the road – getting a park in town is nearly impossible! So, I wasn’t surprised to read that Warragul and Drouin are the fastest growing areas in the nation – surpassing big cities like Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. In fact, this area has grown by a whopping 41 per cent in the past 10 years - that’s over 13,000 people! It certainly explains the change in traffic conditions. Warragul and Drouin have been labelled ‘Tradie Towns’ – with tradie numbers 22 per cent above the national average. We’re a prime location for construction workers – not too far from the city, and there’s heaps of work here and in the city. And it makes sense – more people, more houses, more construction and more demand. But what doesn’t make sense is why our infrastructure is so lacking. If we fail to keep up with this rapid growth, we risk a dire lack of services for our residents. So maybe we should rethink a few things… Maybe we should exempt tradies from ridiculous emissions taxes…especially when they’re the ones with the shovel working to fix the housing crisis! Maybe we should invest in energy infrastructure that we can access now to power our homes – not so called ‘green’ infrastructure that is decades away from heating our homes, and Maybe we should invest in good quality infrastructure for growing regions – whether that’s public transport, hospitals, schools. The list goes on. We need to be thinking ahead – what will the next decade of growth look like? More people demands more infrastructure. It’s hardly rocket science. That’s justice as I see it.

In less than six years, almost a quarter of retail bank branches across the electorate of Monash, my electorate, have closed, and a third of our ATM services have shut down! These closures are shocking, even more so when you consider that Monash is home to the fastest growing towns in the nation. In regional areas such as ours, cash is absolutely essential. It’s a lifeline in times of crisis – we’ve all experienced power outages and internet crashes in the past year, and many businesses were unable to operate unless customers used cash – some were closed for days on end. Yet bank services continue to shut down in regional areas, despite persistent protests from communities urging them to remain open. A recent report by the Senate’s Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee recommended that the Australian Government adopt a policy recognising that access to financial services is an essential service. To this end, the Committee said the government should commit to guaranteeing reasonable access to cash and financial services for all Australians. Seems reasonable to me – more than reasonable. The Committee went even further to recommend that the government develop a mandatory Banking Code of Conduct or Customer Service Code, which would involve a regulator with expertise in consumer protection weighing in on our regional bank closures. Banks would be penalised if they failed to comply. I urge the ACCC to consider the impact these closures are having on vulnerable communities – communities that are often hit the hardest – retirees, small businesses, community groups, regional towns and farmers. Putting people before profits - It’s the right thing to do. That’s justice as I see it.

This means that in the event of another pandemic member countries would be expected to increase their surveillance of dissenters and censor their voices. Who in government signed Australia up to such dystopian measures?

Labor, The Greens, and Teals have got a real problem if they remain ignorant to the undeniable role that nuclear energy must play in our energy grid. If the goal is to reduce emissions and reach net zero by 2050, surely nuclear is the obvious option. Nuclear beats renewable energy, fair and square. Nuclear provides continuous and reliable energy. Renewables provide intermittent and unreliable energy. The future of renewable energy is riddled with uncertainty. Investment in renewable energy projects has stalled because of their flawed business case and governments changing the rules, moving the goal posts. Yet still, the government of the day is persistent to focus on renewables only. And if the Government is so sure that the market does not approve of nuclear energy, just lift the ban and find out! Labor’s obsession with renewables as a source for baseload power doesn’t stack up. Renewables can’t be a source for baseload power due to their intermittent output. It has already gotten to the point where state governments are paying for the continuation of coal-fired power plants because otherwise, we’d be in for blackouts! In a country where we are wealthy in natural resources, we should surely have our energy security figured out. But the failed effort to conform with global standards of ‘sustainability’ will impose a negative supply shock on energy, on ourselves! In the long run, we need to be thinking about sustainability in its former meaning – the ability to maintain productivity, and that is not possible if Australia is left in the dark. That's justice as I see it.
